Orientation and Mobility Specialist and/or Teacher of the Visually Impaired Job Opportunities

Birch Agency is actively recruiting Orientation and Mobility Specialists and Teachers of the Visually Impaired for positions throughout the United States.  We offer full-time and part-time jobs.   We place Orientation and Mobility Specialists and Teachers of the Visually Impaired in school based positions throughout the country.  Birch Agency works with public, private and charter schools to provide services to visually impaired students.  We have opportunities for new graduates, seasoned Orientation and Mobility Specialist and Teachers of the Visually Impaired.  We also have several job opportunities for candidates who are dual certified O&M’s and TVI’s.

Services Provided by Orientation & Mobility Therapist:

  • Prepare students with visual impairments to travel independently and safely
  • Preform evaluations that focus on long and short-term needs of the student
  • Prepare meaningful instruction geared to students assessed needs, IEP goals and objectives, functioning level, and motivation level
  • Prepare and use equipment and materials such as tactile maps, models, optical devices, pre-canes, GPS devices, and long canes
  • Provide orientation of new buildings and new class schedules as needed
  • Provide instruction/information on recreational leisure skills, outdoor travel skills, residential, and commercial public transportation

 Services Provided by Teachers of the Visually Impaired:

  • Perform functional vision and learning media assessments
  • Interpret eye medical reports as they relate to educational environments
  • Contribute to the development of the IEP
  • Recommend appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as low vision, orientation and mobility, psycho-social, and adaptive physical education
  • Consult with diagnosticians, classroom teachers, students, and parents concerning appropriate evaluations, modification, and test administration
  • Provide Braille Instruction

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Teaching for the Visually Impaired and/or Orientation and Mobility
  • ACVERP COMS Certificate preferred for O&M Specialists (required in some states)
